Savages new album Adore Life drops January 22 on Matador, and their tour diary is the perfect lead up to it. Taken by the photographer known as TIM, the snaps are stellar. Moody, well-lit, and composed in an interesting way, these photos are bringing Renaissance portraiture to Punk – chiaroscuro and all.
They’re also just the opposite of the normal boring slew of band photos. There’s texture to them, and they look at the everyday passings of being a band instead of just showing an ultra-cool still life of people who play instruments. The photos catch the band going to radio interviews, relaxing backstage, sound-checking, and in the midst of a performance at Bansky’s Dismaland: even in their in-between moments, Savages are as intense as ever.
The punk four-piece takes cues from a tradition of dark British post-punk – Gang of Four, Siouxsie and the Banshees, PJ Harvey, Public Image Ltd. – and New York No Wave, most notably Swans. Their music is biting and high-octane. Their live performances are known to be other-worldly. Check out the band’s spine-chilling video for ‘Adore”’off of the upcoming release:
